Beachin' Rides? Volusia County Considers Expanding Driving on Daytona Beach

Daytona Beach's iconic hard-sand stretches might soon see the return of a familiar sight: cars. Volusia County Council Chair Jeff Brower is proposing to reopen a section of beach, between International Speedway Boulevard and Auditorium Boulevard, to vehicle traffic. This area has been car-free for over two decades, with the county initially aiming to attract larger resorts by offering them private beach access.

However, the policy seems to have had unintended consequences. While some big businesses thrived, local merchants on Main Street, like Louie Louizes, saw a decline. Louizes attributes this to the lack of convenient parking for beachgoers, who would likely spend more time and money in the area if their cars were parked nearby.

Brower acknowledges the mixed feelings on the proposal. While some motels might not be thrilled about the change, Brower emphasizes a willingness to work with all parties involved. He highlights the potential benefits of increased parking – particularly during peak tourist seasons – with the reopened section offering an estimated 1,000 new spaces.

This proposal faces several hurdles before becoming reality. The county council will discuss the plan on Tuesday, and even if approved, it would require additional green lights from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) and the state government.

Whether beach driving makes a comeback in Daytona remains to be seen, but one thing's for sure – the debate is likely to heat up as the council meeting approaches.

“My sister and i were in the market for an investment property in West Volusia. I have purchased a number of properties from numerous agents. They all were nice and competent, but Allen was very accommodating with his time and efforts. We called him too many times and changed our ‘wish list’ half a dozen times. He never became impatient. If he didn’t have an answer, he would reach out to necessary parties to get it immediately. I’ve never written a review for an agent, but for Allen, I made an exception. He is fun, personable, professional, and informed.”
